Actress Carey Mulligan is urging members of the public to put on their walking shoes and support Memory Walk. In its eleventh year, Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. Events will take place around the UK throughout September.
Carey, whose grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s eight years ago, is asking families and individuals to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support local people with dementia and their carers. A variety of entertainment and refreshments will be available making it a day to remember for the whole family.
There are 750,000 people with dementia in the UK. The money raised from Memory Walk will help to fund vital local services for people with dementia and their carers. Such services include day support and befriending which can radically improve people’s lives.
Memory Walk 2012 is being held by Alzheimer’s Society in partnership with Bupa. Walks will take place at various venues across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and are open to people of all ages, children to grandparents.
Kathryn Betts, from Alzheimer’s Society said: ‘Memory Walk is a fantastic way to spend a day. Families, friends, colleagues and individuals can walk together to raise money to help local people with dementia. Additionally an array of entertainment and refreshments will be available making it a day to remember for everyone who takes part.
‘Thanks to the support of Bupa, Memory Walk is able to support more people living with dementia through the vital funds that are raised.’

Hollywood actress Carey Mulligan is to front a PR campaign for dementia charity Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness and extend its reach.
As part of Dementia Awareness Week, Mulligan, whose grandmother Margaret was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2004, hopes to “shine a light” on the condition, which affects one in three people over the age of 65.
Alzheimer’s Society wants to reduce the stigma around dementia and hopes that backing from a young A-list celebrity will help it reach new audiences and get people talking about it more openly. It has created a five point guide to help people learn more about the condition as part of its ‘Remember the Person’ campaign.
Speaking at an event to launch Dementia Awareness Week which runs from 20 to 26 May, Mulligan said: “I am committed to helping the Alzheimer’s Society in any way I can. My family and I rely on the help of organisations like Alzheimer’s Society to help us understand the disease and guide us in the care of my grandmother.
“By speaking about my grandmother’s dementia I hope to shine a light on the condition. This Dementia Awareness Week we are asking people to ‘remember the person’ by looking beyond someone’s diagnosis of dementia and engaging with them.’
Carey Mulligan’s custom-made Prada frock topped many a best dressed list for this week’s Met Ball. And now, if you’re lucky, it could work the same sartorial magic on you.
Of course, Mulligan isn’t getting rid of the frock to make a quick buck–100% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Oxfam, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. In other words, you’ll be getting a show-stopping Prada dress and the satisfaction of knowing your purchase is helping to make the world a better place.
The dress went up for auction late last night and will be on the bidding block until May 19. So far there are six bids, hiking the price of the gown up to $1000–which is still, you know, not that bad for a one-of-a-kind Prada dress. And like we said: It’s for charity!
So if you’r a European size 38-40 (that’s a US 2-4), we suggest you put your bid in now. No telling, how high the stakes will get.
Last night was the rather dazzling Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, which was the first event that the lovely Carey attended as a married woman! This year’s Benefit was celebrating the opening of the Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations exhibition and was co-chaired by Carey, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and designer Miuccia Prada. She looked amazing in a Prada gold and silver degradé metal paillettes scaled halter neck dress, shoes, and bag, paired with Neil Lane jewellery. The first batch of pictures have been added to the gallery, with more on the way. Enjoy!

The 57th annual Drama Desk Awards look set to be a big night for Broadway production Follies and the off-Broadway show Death Takes a Holiday – both landed 10 nominations each.
The trophies will be presented during a ceremony at The Town Hall in New York City on 3 June (12).
Variety are reporting that Carey is no longer attached to the untitled Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman project due to scheduling conflicts.
Rooney Mara is in final negotiations to join Spike Jonze’s upcoming project now that Carey Mulligan has fallen out due to scheduling conflicts.
Untitled project stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Samantha Morton. Jonze penned the script and is set to direct the pic about a man who falls in love with the voice of a computer. Details of Mara’s role are unclear.
