‘‘No one exactly bestows advice on you,’’ says Mulligan. ‘‘You learn by watching what others do.’’
Emma Thompson, who plays Mulligan’s implacable headmistress, was on first-name terms with the entire film crew ‘‘within 20 minutes of coming on set’’, says Mulligan, and sealed the deal by buying beer and pizza for all.
Screenwriter Hornby ‘‘has become a mentor’’, she says.
‘‘He’s become a really good friend — he’s helped me with all the choices I’ve been making this year.’’
