By turns as elegant as Audrey Hepburn and as pixie-smile adorable as Audrey Tautou, Mulligan has stolen critics’ and audiences’ hearts as Jenny Miller, a British schoolgirl stifled by England’s early-’60s air of conformity. The character sees a way out in a handsome older suitor (Peter Sarsgaard), and the actress, playing 16 brilliantly though she was 23 at the time, makes the consequences of the leap wrenchingly bittersweet.
Also, Carey has dished to People.com about her desire to have long hair once more! Famous for her pixie cut, which has accompanied her to every one of her press tours since ‘An Education’, Carey comments that she continues to keep her cute crop because she dreads the “horrible stage” of her hair looking like she’s homless! The article can be read here, excerpt available below.
“I really want long hair,” Carey Mulligan confessed to PEOPLE on Tuesday at the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards gala in New York, where she nabbed the Best Actress prize for her role in An Education, “But I don’t have time to grow it out.”
Explaining her freshly-shorn, exceedingly close crop, the Brit actress, who was dressed in a sleek black cocktail shift by Prada and dangly Fred Leighton earrings, said, “It was getting all shaggy. It was all growing out. It gets to that horrible stage where you look homeless.”
